Board Member

CJ Norris

CJ is a teacher, artist, and part-time farmer in Shelby, North Carolina. In 2017 he graduated from UNC at Charlotte with a Bachelor of Arts in architecture. He started teaching the same year after doing 3 years interning at an architecture firm. Teaching allows him to cultivate a young artist and inspire them to pursue their passions. His artwork is centered on the “voices” at the bottom- the vulnerable, the disenfranchised, and the poor or working class- which typically are not seen in current art or heard in today’s society. He started Healy Lane Farm in 2022, a no-till, organic practicing farm that utilizes Afro-indigenous agroforestry, silvopasture, and spiritual farming practices to regenerate the land. Their mission is to create a sustainable food source for minorities (primarily Black/African-American) and the disenfranchised in both rural and urban areas in Cleveland County, North Carolina.

Board Vice Chair

Scout Denning

Board Member

Growing up amidst farms in rural NC led Scout to pursue my studies in sustainable agriculture and rural livelihood strategy at Appalachian State University. Her focus is on the relationship between land, food and community. Broad River Community Market has proven to be an effective bridge between all of these factors. She is currently managing Newgrass Brewing Company and building a small regenerative farm called Jupiter's Pantry. She hopes to facilitate connections between these entities to expand the local food web within our county, and improve access to fresh ingredients for all.
